Anyone who knows about Carrolton, Texas, knows it’s a hotspot for family fun every fall when it comes time to enjoy the month-long Texas State Fair! The fun doesn’t stop there! Carrollton has lots of different family-friendly locations for kids of all ages, with all different interests!
A.W. Perry Homestead Museum
Take a trip back into Victorian times when visiting the A.W. Perry Homestead Museum. This historical museum provides a peek into what life was like in north-central Texas in 1857 when A.W. and Sarah Perry first built their house on 640 acres. The original home was eventually torn down in 1909 by their son Dewitt Perry. However, lumber from the original Perry house was used to build Dewitt’s new home for himself and his wife. This family home was converted into the museum that many families visit today, but you can still find the foundation stones of the first Perry farmhouse in the museum’s backyard.

Elm Fork Nature Preserve
The land found at the Elm Fork Nature Preserve was never clear-cut and, in 1986, was given to the City of Carrollton as a self-contained ecosystem, virtually undisturbed. Trails are open for hikes 365 days a year, from dawn to dusk. Be sure to stay on designated trails, take only pictures, and leave only footprints when taking in the incredible beauty of the preserve. Leave your bicycles and precious pups at home while enjoying commonly seen animals such as raccoons, fox squirrels, beavers, armadillos, eastern cottontails, and striped skunks. Bird watching is another great activity to participate in while visiting, with commonly seen birds such as the great blue herons, snowy egrets, white-throated sparrows, red-tailed hawks, and more.
