Beat the Heat: Top 5 Splash Pads in San Antonio

When the summer sun blazes in San Antonio, we’re all looking for ways to keep cool. For families with kids on the autism spectrum, however, finding sensory-friendly environments can sometimes feel like a challenge. Fortunately, San Antonio has a plethora of splash pads that provide relief from the heat and a safe, inclusive space for sensory play.

We’ve created a list of the top five splash pads in the city. Let’s dive in!

Hemisfair Park
434 S Alamo St

Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Hemisfair Park’s splash pad, known as Yanaguana Garden, offers a refreshing escape. Its sprawling design allows kids to explore different water features at their own pace, reducing the chances of sensory overload. The water jets are gentle, and there are quieter corners for kids who need a break from the action. Don’t forget to enjoy the accessible playground equipment and shaded seating areas!

Pearsall Park
4838 Old Pearsall Rd

Pearsall Park, situated on the city’s southwest side, boasts one of the largest splash pads in San Antonio. The pad includes various water features that cater to different sensory needs, like misters for light touch and dump buckets for more intense interaction. The park also offers plenty of space to retreat and calm down if the experience becomes overwhelming.

Fischer Park
1935 Hilltop Summit Road

This New Braunfels gem may be a bit outside of San Antonio, but it’s worth the drive. Fischer Park is a universally accessible playground with a gentle, sensory-friendly splash pad. It also features shade structures and grassy areas for picnicking. The park’s design is aimed at minimizing stress and encouraging fun for children of all abilities.

Elmendorf Lake Park
3700 W Commerce St

Located in West San Antonio, Elmendorf Lake Park is a beautiful oasis that offers a tranquil environment. Its splash pad features multiple low-intensity water jets and fountains. The surrounding areas are quiet and serene, with plenty of space for kids to relax if the splash pad becomes too stimulating.

Pearl Park
5100 Northwest Loop 410

Pearl Park, part of the historic Pearl Brewery complex, offers an urban oasis with a splash pad set amidst restored buildings and riverside trails. The splash pad features light water jets perfect for a gentle, sensory-friendly experience. There’s ample shaded seating, and the buzz of the city is quiet enough not to overwhelm sensitive ears.

Choosing the right environment for your child can make a big difference in their comfort and enjoyment. Each of these splash pads in San Antonio provides a unique setting where children with autism can safely explore, play, and cool down in the summer heat.

Before you head out, remember to bring sunblock, hats, and possibly a favorite toy or item that brings comfort to your child. It’s also a good idea to visit at less crowded times, usually early morning or late afternoon, to ensure a calm and enjoyable experience.

This summer, we hope you and your family will create some wonderful memories at these inclusive splash pads. Stay cool, San Antonio!
